Question Starters

This routine helps us dig deeper into an issue, exploring causes, effects, and possibilities. This is our version of the Visible Thinking routine “Question Starts“.

Our usual online pattern is as follows:

1. Generate Questions:

Come up at least one thoughtful questions about today’s issues from each cluster of question starters below (ie. one question per group below).

    Why is … important?


    What is the difference between… and…?
    What are the consequences of…?
    Explain why / Explain how?
    What is … similar to?
    How are … and … similar?

2. Choose and Ask Your Question:

  • Post the most thought-provoking and important question from the last step.

3. Join the Discussion:

  • Answer as many of your classmates’ thinking questions with well-developed and thoughtful answers.
