Teacher’s Suggestions: The Memoir Project

Our work on the memoir project had students at work for weeks, digging for ideas, preparing drafts, confering with “beta readers” and typing up final copies.

Some of the best work came from surprising places.  Two of the top writers are newcomers to the United States had have already achieved astonishing things.

Here are links to some that I liked best:

How I met my first best friend! by ZP

I bet you still remember who your first friend was, I mean, everyone does! Well my first friend was also my first best friend and she is still one of my best friends. Her name is Chelsea and she is super flabbergasting! We have had many good times together, and I’ll never forget how I met her. We were just two little girls lost on our first day of pre-school, we had no idea where to go, who to talk to, what to do; we were clueless. Our uniforms were impeccable and our hair was still in place. That morning was historic for both of us; it was something that marked our life forever. All that had seem like the smallest seed in the world created this immense, unbreakable tree called friendship. Continue reading “How I met my first best friend! by ZP”

Leaving myself behind by ZP

Leaving myself behind was the most challenging thing I’ve ever done. Leaving my friends, family, and culture was like getting separated from all I am. My mom’s decision of leaving the Dominican Republic hit me like a truck. It was something would never expect. I was so amazed that I didn’t even know what to think! I mean, I didn’t quite know if it would be a good thing or a bad thing. She made her decision based on the picture of a better life, more opportunities, and she always says:

“The most important reason we’re here, is because I always wanted to give you what you deserve.” Continue reading “Leaving myself behind by ZP”

Most Confidential Encounter by ZP

My mom is the most precious thing I have in life, and my love just increased when she gave me the biggest surprise ever. I was 8 years old and I was living in the Dominican Republic at that time. Everything felt so dead, the plants looked so opaque, and life wasn’t life. Everything was still the same, but it felt different. I felt so happy and fortunate to have every feeling I thought was dead back because I was feeling so sad and alone. I thought she wasn’t going to be there, by my side, when I missed her the most. And she did, she came back. After nearly 7 months, just 2 days before Christmas, my mom came home from New York, just to spend time with me. I immediately said to myself: Thanks God, for giving me what I wanted. Continue reading “Most Confidential Encounter by ZP”

Nightmare Birthday by YO

He was chasing me I got very scared thank god it was only a dream. On April 15 2009 around 2:00 pm my stepmother sends me to go buy something at a place. I took my puppy (Bolillo) with me. I don’t remember if I tied my puppy or asked someone to hold him but I went in the store quickly looked for what I was asked to buy. Then I came out and I took my puppy. We were walking though the park and he did some “business” I cleaned it up. While that time I was walking back home I didn’t feel well. I felt like I wanted to vomit or just got dizzy. Then I got home told my father I felt sick. So then I felt like if someone would be punching me in my brain. My head was hurting a lot that I started vomiting and then my stomach was hurting I couldn’t go to sleep until 2:00 am. Continue reading “Nightmare Birthday by YO”

… by Yo

The bells rang and I learned a lesson. One day I was with some of my friends and as usual we would go downstairs to get some lunch and come back up with someone. So we went up on the elevator. We started going up, when we were on the 2/3 floor someone was leaning on the button wall and by mistake switched some button. Continue reading “… by Yo”
